Tips for Making the Switch to a Gluten-Free Life

There are many benefits to switching to a gluten-free diet, from weight loss to alleviating the symptoms of celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, and even helping to reduce the symptoms of ADHD. If you’re considering making the switch, you’ve probably been overwhelmed by the realization that gluten is in practically everything in your diet. Today going gluten-free is easier than ever, especially if you know a few tricks of the trade.

Make Food Labels Your Friend

There are so many foods that contain gluten that it can be a bit of a shock for people who decide to go gluten-free. From ketchup to soy sauce, and even ice cream, gluten-containing foods aren’t always what you’d expect. That’s why reading food labels is a must in a gluten-free diet.

Because some brands of certain products, like ketchup, contain gluten while other brands do not, there is no way to simply exclude foods by category. You could, but then you’d risk missing out on indulging in something delicious.

Know Where to Find Gluten-Free Foods

The idea of a gluten-free diet wasn’t a concept widely known until a few years ago, but suddenly

gluten free fitness

it seems everyone is going gluten-free. Buying gluten-free products once meant a trip to an off-the-beaten-path specialty health food shop. Today you’ll find many gluten-free products at your local grocery store thanks to brands like Betty Crocker and Bisquick, which offer gluten-free alternatives to some of their most popular products.

Get a Bread Machine

At one time, gluten-free breads weren’t all that fabulous. Some might say a gluten-free hamburger bun was akin to eating a hockey puck. That’s changed dramatically for the better. There are some fantastic bakers who can do incredible things with gluten-free cookies, cupcakes, breads, and more. Find one local to you and make them your new BFF.

For all those daily occasions, a bread machine will become your go-to appliance. There are thousands of gluten-free bread recipes to be found online, or you can score a gluten-free cookbook at your local book store.

Pay Attention to Your Health in All Areas

Switching to a gluten-free lifestyle might initially seem all-consuming. You have to get used to identifying gluten-containing foods, figure out where the best restaurants are that offer gluten-free options, and hone your culinary skills to put that shiny new bread machine to use. But be mindful of maintaining healthy habits in every area of your life.

If weight loss is your primary motivator for adopting a gluten-free lifestyle, exercise is a great supplement to your new diet that will help you shed the pounds quickly.

Not a big fan of high-impact exercise? Think about ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Like taking your dog for a daily walk (and reap the other health benefits of dog ownership while you’re at it) or making it a habit to take the stairs instead of the elevator.  Swimming is also a great way to get a good workout while avoiding extra stress on your joints. In fact, swimming is one of the most effective ways to strengthen your body, boost your self-esteem, and build your energy levels.

Going gluten-free can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for your overall health and well-being. These tips will help you transition into your new lifestyle while maintaining and improving your health in every area.

Hello, my dear GFF readers!

The blog is not quite dead yet. As you may have noticed, it’s actually received some CPR and gotten a fresh new look. I can take no credit for this, it temporarily belonged to the Jon Gorrie, where Jon has since passed the reigns to the new GFF’er in chief, Terry L Grover.

Since I have clearly been neglecting GFF for far too long, Terry is taking over full time. He will be keeping and expanding upon the GFF content you have come to know and love. You’ll see all kinds of new stuff coming down the pike.

I will still be around, but very infrequently. From time to time you may see a post from me, but Jon is now the chief chef and bottle washer. I am confident that you are all in good hands.

That said, I hope you all enjoy the new content and look!

Yours in health and fun,

How to get started at a gym: 5 tips

Starting out at a gym can be daunting… all those machines, and all those other gym goers who look like they’ve been spending the past decade doing nothing else except working out and eating right. How do you get started? Don’t worry, here are some simple tips to help you get started on your road to health, regardless of your current level of fitness.

1. Ask for demonstrations of the equipment

Most modern gyms offer free demonstrations of all workout equipment at least once or twice per week. Sign up for to get a demonstration. This is important! Not only do you get shown around the gym and shown correct technique (which helps avoid injuries), you’ll also meet some other beginners, which can help you with the next tip.

2. Find a workout partner

Having a workout partner is a great way to stay motivated. Either find another newbie, or a gym regular, and arrange to meet at the gym at fixed days/times. This way, you can get in shape and enjoy the social element of gym training while you’re resting between exercises.

3. Start out easy

It might be very tempting to work as many machines and free weights as possible in your first days at a gym, but here’s a quick word of advice about this: DON’T!

Silence your ego, start off very gently with a few select exercises, and then gradually work your way up, both in terms of weight, reps, and workout duration.

Here’s a simple beginner gym program perfect to help you get started if you’re completely new to fitness.

4. Have realistic expectations

If your physique is currently more Marshmallow Man than Mr. or Ms. Universe, it’s going to take you some time to shed that excess fat, tone and build up muscle and flexibility. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so be patient! When you’re just getting started out, forget about bulging biceps. What you should be focusing on is correct form, light weights, flexibility, and plenty of stretching.

5. Train regularly

1 hour per day 3 days per week, or 3 hours once per week: which do you think is going to give you best results? Regularity is important when it comes to getting started at a gym. When starting out, make sure you have at least 1 day off between workout sessions. One plan that seems to work for a lot of people is to working out on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 1 hour at a time. Try it, and see if this approach fits into your schedule.

The cross-trainer, or orbital machine as it is sometimes called, is a great no-impact, full-body workout. To begin with, set the resistance level to 1. Make sure you pump your legs as well as push/pull your arms on the moving handles. Again, keep a comfortable and steady pace.

Bike, level 1 – 3: 10 minutes
Back on the exercise bike, we’re working only legs and cardio now. Even as a beginner, you may find resistance level 1 too easy on most bikes. Crank it up to 2 or even 3. Maintain a steady pace. Your heart rate should start to rise, and you may even start to break a sweat by this point.

Rowing machine, level 1: 5 minutes
A rowing machine can take a few minutes to get used to. Here, you need to co-ordinate both upper and lower body. Make sure you push with your legs and pull with your arms at the same time. The picture below should help you get started.

Leg raises: 5 reps, 2 sets

What to do if you have a cold or the flu: 8 tips

Here are 8 tips on what to do if you have a cold or the flu

Colds and flu can be mildly irritating at the best of times, and life-threatening at worst! They seldom come at suitable times, so what should you do if you’ve come down with a cold or the flu, and need to get better fast? Here are some pointers:

#1 Prevention is always better than cure

The best way to contract colds and flu is to allow yourself to get run down, tired, and make sure you eat low-nutrient food. Ergo, the best way to prevent colds and flu is to make sure you get an ample amount of quality sleep every night (7 – 9 hours. The exact amount depends on the individual). Also, avoid eating junk – otherwise known as fast ”food”. Instead, eat freshly prepared, nutrient-rich foods. There are plenty of recipes here.

#2 Sleep

If you are afflicted with colds and flu, sleep should be your number 1 priority, as when we are sleeping, the body is in a rest-and-recover phase. If your body is fighting an infection (of any kind), you’ll need all the sleep you can get.

#3 Vitamins

We all know a little about vitamins and minerals and their effects on the body. When sick with colds or flu, your body can benefit from a high dosage of Vitamin C, combined with Vitamin B complex, as well as zinc. High-concentrate vitamins are best. Although it is possible to ”overdose” on some vitamins, we cannot overdose on Vitamin C. When sick with colds or flu, take up to 4000 mg of Vitamin C throughout the day. Any excess not absorbed by the body will be eliminated. A cautionary note: Too much Vitamin C can cause the elimination process to speed up (ie. you may get diarrhea if you overdo it!)

#4 Friendly bacteria tablets

We all have bacteria inside of us – both friendly, and harmful. A large proportion of the body’s immune system is based in the intestines. By taking friendly bacteria (lactobacteria) tablets, we can make sure our intestinal flora is well-balanced, helping to prevent, and possibly also speed our recovery from colds and flu.

#5 Fluids: Lemon, honey, and ginger tea

A high fluid intake can be helpful in ”flushing” out colds and flu. Here is an easy recipe for lemon, honey and ginger tea that, when you drink large amounts (eg: 2 liters per day or more) , can speed recovery from colds and flu.

#6 Keep warm – very warm!

Keep warm by wearing a hat, scarf, and several layers of clothing – yes, when indoors! In this way, your body doesn’t have to work at keeping warm, rather, it can divert its resources to fighting the virus.

#7 Take some time off

This should be a given, but there are just too many people that decide they absolutely must “soldier on” with colds and flu. By turning up for work sick, you both prolong your own recovery process, and jeopardize the health of your co-workers. Do them (and yourself) a favor, and take some time off. Chances are you’ve earned it!

#8 Make the most of the situation

When resting up at home, recovering from colds and flu, you don’t have to get bored! Watch a movie, read that book that’s been waiting on the bedside table for the past 6 months, write emails, or, send us your gluten free recipes!

Birthday physical challenge

Every year since 2009, I have a birthday physical challenge; to carry out a physical feat on my birthday. While it might be more common to celebrate with over indulgence, I’m much more interested in achieving something that I couldn’t do the previous year.

I’m not trying to break any records, I’m just trying to keep in shape, give myself something to aim for each year, and hopefully improve myself for every year that goes by.
